This month, our theme “NEW DAY” is inspired by the incredible lyrics in the song “Burn the Ships” by for KING & COUNTRY.
Step into a new day
We can rise up from the dust and walk away
We can dance upon our heartache, yeah
So light a match, leave the past, burn the ships
And don’t you look back
Moments before I heard these lyrics for the first time last year, I was in my car driving a moderate speed. For those of you that know me personally, know that I have compared my driving skill and tenacity to racecar drivers (thanks to my dad!). My car is an 8-speed sports drive steptronic that results in a blistering 4.5-second zero-to-60-mph time with 300 horsepower at 6000 rpm’s. If you’re not into cars like this daddy’s girl, just know that my car fulfills my need for speed and the rumbling tailpipes make me grin.
As this song played through my speakers, every inch of my body turned into over-drive. I increased my speed, grabbed a hold of an incredible focus and with tears running down my face as I belted out the words “SO LIGHT A MATCH. LEAVE THE PAST. BURN THE SHIPS. AND DON’T LOOK BACK.” as my mind quickly recalled the long, arduous health journey and the fear that this slow and quiet life is my new normal.
I struggle with burning ships. I catch myself looking back at the life I once lived with envy. I was healthy, accomplished, focused, full of energy. And I crave to return, knowing full well that if I was actually able to attain this, I would likely get sick again and be back to the beginning of my health journey.
As we approach this brand new month in 2020, my hope and prayer for each of us is to step into a new day. To leave the past, burn the ships and don’t look back. This theme will be woven through Autoimmune Sisters this month as we embrace the life we are living and see where our health journey’s take us this year.
